When we moved to Piemonte we wondered how our new surroundings would influence our work. There is a particular quality we have found here in the Alta Langa landscape, in the old stone farm houses and in the people of our community: a rugged elegance. This has made a profound impression on us.
The landscape where our home and studio are situated is mostly made of steep terraced hills overgrown with forest. This contrast between the ordered structure of the stone-walled terraces and the chaotic resurgence of nature is captivating. It exposes the layered history of the area and the unstoppable force of change and nature itself.
The old farm houses, like the one we inhabit, were built by hand with the materials found in the landscape: the native stone “Pietra della Langa” and the wood of the immense chestnut trees which must have dominated the original forest here. The wood and stone are full of colour from minerals and age. They display a palette which includes broad transitions from light grey to black, pale taupe to dark brown, delicate pinks to deep rust, light cream to a warm yellow.
The stoneware featured in this collection aims to capture the same range of natural colours we see around us in a material which has a similar ancient character. It has a strength and versatility that is so durable and functional yet capable of delicate, refined details resulting in objects that reflect the rugged elegance of our surroundings.
